Intern - Robotics

What's the role?

Hilti has recently launched a semi-autonomous mobile drilling robot, the Jaibot. But many challenges remain. During this internship, you will investigate, test and develop on state-of-the-art algorithms functional to mobile manipulator autonomy. It is a challenging opportunity to get both theoretical insights into the algorithmic aspects as well as to do hands on implementation, practical work on physical robot prototypes.

Start date is flexible to the student's availability, duration of at least 6 months.

Who is Hilti?

At Hilti, we are a passionate global team committed to making construction better. As a trusted partner in productivity, safety, and sustainability, we provide innovative solutions that shape the buildings, roads, and infrastructure essential to daily life. At Hilti, careers are made real by empowering you to explore the possibilities, maximize your potential, own your development, and create meaningful impact every day.

What does the role involve?

As an intern in our Robotics & Visual Computing group, you will be part of our research and technology development team on construction robot autonomy topics. You will work closely with leading experts in the field to explore and dive into cutting edge robot autonomy algorithms.

Mobile manipulator autonomy revolves around three main topics of manipulator motion planning w/o obstacle avoidance, robot localization and mapping with focus on sensor fusion and mobile base path planning w/o obstacle avoidance. Depending on your interest, motivation and prior experiences, you will be tasked to work on either one or two of the three autonomy topics. Irrespective of the autonomy topic, the key assignment is to understand and document the algorithmic details behind the state-of-the-art methods and simulate, test and develop on them for construction application use cases on physical robot prototypes. Additionally, you will test the robustness and limitations of these algorithms and explore practical challenges and solutions especially considering real world deployment scenarios.

We have 400 of the world’s best engineers developing and testing tomorrow’s technical solutions in our innovation center in Liechtenstein.

What do we offer?

Joining our headquarters in Schaan, Nendeln, or Buchs connects you with a diverse community of over 2,100 colleagues from 70 nationalities in a region where Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland intersect. Our employee groups actively support causes like female empowerment and the LGBTQIA+ community and offer leisure activities like mountain biking and tennis. We also provide opportunities for community engagement both locally and internationally. Benefits at our headquarters include shared e-bikes, an on-site gym, dining options, learning opportunities, financial guidance, free parking, fuel discounts, workation, sabbatical, meditation / relaxation rooms, Hilti tool rental service, massage possibilities and relocation support.

What you need is:

  • Enrollment for the whole internship period in a Master’s program in computer science, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering
  • Good knowledge and prior experience in programming (C++, ROS, Gazebo)
  • Hardware debugging and code deployment experience on physical robot prototypes
  • Experience with either motion planning or sensor fusion algorithms for manipulator and mobile robots
  • Patience, drive and persistence for working on challenging problems
  • Why should you apply?

We have an excellent mix of people, which we believe makes for a more vibrant, more productive team. If you have no knowledge of construction, that’s fine with us. We are more interested in your ability, commitment and drive to succeed.
