Data Scientist

What's the role?

In the role of a Data Scientist, you will collaborate with our Data Engineers on advanced statistical modelling. Hilti has a tremendous wealth of external and internal data. We are using it to bring our customer relationship to another level as well as develop advanced tools and services based on tool data. The Data Science team is highly technical and in the same time at the core of Hilti’s digital business.

What does the role involve?

In this role, you design experiments, test hypotheses, develop and program models. You work in agile, iterative processes and conduct advanced data analysis and implement highly complex statistical algorithms. You develop experimental design approaches to validate findings or test hypotheses.

As a Data Scientist you lead discovery processes to identify the business requirements. You work with and alongside business analysts to model and frame business scenarios that are meaningful and which affect critical decisions and business processes.

You identify what data is available and relevant, including internal and external data sources, structured and unstructured data, leveraging new data collection processes such as smart meters and connected tool information or social media. You collaborate with global subject matter experts to select the relevant sources of information. You make strategic recommendations on data collection, integration and retention requirements incorporating business requirements and knowledge of best practices.
You develop usage and access control policies and systems in collaboration with the data steward. You partner with the data stewards in continuous improvement processes impacting data quality in the context of the specific use case.
You present and depict the rationale of your findings in easy to understand terms for the business. You present back results that contradict common belief, if needed. You communicate and work with business subject matter experts and organizational leadership. You educate the organization both from IT and the business perspectives on new approaches, such as testing hypotheses and statistical validation of results. You help the organization understand the principles and the mathematics behind the process to drive organizational buy-in.
You provide on-going tracking and monitoring of performance of decision systems and statistical models. You lead the design and deployment of enhancements and fixes to systems as needed.

What you need is:

  • Master in a quantitative field (mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science or related field) with excellent academic track record. PhD is a plus
  • Strong programming skills in R and Python
  • Strong data engineering skills in SQL and spark in order to partner up most efficiently with our data engineers
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, forecasting/predictive analytics, multivariate testing, and optimization algorithms, machine learning algorithms and generative AI prompt engineering/knowledge retrieval
  • The ability to come up with solutions to loosely defined business problems by leveraging pattern detection over potentially large datasets. Strong communication and interpersonal skills
