From Growth to Gratitude: My Journey at Hilti
Five years ago, if someone had predicted that I would transition from a career in the ophthalmic to the construction industry, I would have completely dismissed the notion. Yet, here I am, proving that professional evolution is not only possible but sometimes necessary.
Finding My Place as a Latina in Construction
Entering the construction industry as a Latina in a traditionally male-dominated field was intimidating. Thanks to some outstanding leadership and reassurance, I learned to navigate the demands of our profession while embracing my cultura. In an industry where diversity is still evolving, I am very proud to work for Hilti who prioritizes diversity and inclusion initiatives.
When I first joined Hilti and stepped onto a construction site with my bright red Hilti hard hat sitting high atop my head, my squeaky-clean Red Wing boots fastened securely on my feet. It was a hot summer day, and I distinctly remember the smell of diesel & burnt metal filled the air. As I made my way inside the auditorium site, high pitch drill motor sounds replaced the rumble of motors heard outside. I was one of a few women in sight and I could feel it. Eyes glanced my way, some curious and some maybe skeptical.
In my head I thought, “Ma’am, what in the world did you get yourself into? Run! What are you thinking? What is the weight capacity on that scissor lift he expects me to hop into? Does he think I’m an idiot?” I immediately reminded myself I wasn’t there to prove to anyone I belong; I was there because I did belong.

The Power of Mentorship and Asking for Help
The gentleman who navigated me through the site was Diego Semmere, VP for IDDO Construction. He knew I was new to Hilti and construction in general and took the time to explain what they were doing and patiently fielded all my questions. I thought asking for help might be seen as a weakness, but I quickly learned asking for help is a sign of collaboration, humility and strength. What started as an uncomfortable experience for me turned into an opportunity and I felt empowered. Confidence is contagious and I had caught a case.
I had no idea how transformative the journey ahead would be. From day one, I was welcomed into a culture that values authenticity, ambition and community. It wasn’t long before I found myself not only growing in my role but also finding ways to give back, most notably through our Latinx Employee Resource Group (ERG), where I had the privilege of serving as the people development co-chair.
Leading Through the Latinx Employee Resource Group
Being part of that ERG was more than just a leadership opportunity, it was a chance to connect, advocate and help shape a more inclusive workplace. That experience, combined with the support of incredible mentors and leaders, helped me build the confidence and skills to continue to develop myself. With the encouragement of thoughtful, people-first leaders, I recently took on a new role as a Strategic Account Manager. This promotion reflects more than just career progression, it’s a testament to the development opportunities, mentorship and trust I’ve received along the way.
Another part of my journey that I deeply cherish is the opportunity to learn from my peers. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside incredibly talented, driven and generous colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge and experiences. Whether it’s through collaborative projects, informal conversations or simply observing how others lead with integrity and creativity, I’ve grown so much by being part of this team.

Balancing Career Growth and Motherhood
Over time, these colleagues have become more than coworkers, they’ve become an extended work family. We celebrate each other’s wins, support one another through challenges and genuinely care about each other’s success. That sense of connection and community has made my experience here even more meaningful.
What truly sets Hilti apart is how our leaders invest in people. They don’t only talk about development; they create space for it. They’ve supported me through every step of my career, and as importantly, they’ve supported me as a working mom with a busy family. Balancing a career and motherhood isn’t always easy, but here, I’ve found the flexibility, understanding and encouragement I need to thrive in both roles.
I’m grateful every day to be part of a company that leads with heart, values growth and understands that success looks different for everyone. This culture has shaped who I am today and I’m excited for what’s still to come. Mil gracias Hilti! Te Quiero Mucho.
