Not All Paths Are Straight: Cementing Your Own Journey

“I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”  Maya Angelou

Life rarely unfolds in a straight line. Sometimes, the most unexpected detours become the most defining chapters of our story. My journey from stumbling through college to thriving in the military and later at Hilti is a testament to the power of resilience, values and finding purpose in places you never imagined.

A Hard Choice Became the Right One

Leaving high school, I thought college would be my launchpad. Instead, it felt like I was a bird trying to find its wings fluttering, flailing and ultimately falling. College wasn’t for me. That was my first hard lesson in life, and it came with a choice: get a job or join the military.

Joining the military wasn’t an easy decision, but it turned out to be one of the best I’ve ever made. The Army gave me more than a career, it gave me direction, discipline and a deep sense of purpose. During difficult times and under intense pressure while serving, I learned the value of self-motivation, teamwork, respect, courage, honor and integrity. We had to rely on each other completely, no one could succeed alone. I had to push myself beyond my limits, trust my team and uphold our values even when the stakes were high. That experience shaped how I approach challenges to this day.

I already had a strong foundation thanks to my incredible family. The military simply added the structure and clarity I needed to face the world with confidence.

Finding Purpose: Cementing My Journey at Hilti

After my time in the military, and other years with another company, I found myself at Hilti another unexpected turn that just felt right. From day one, I was welcomed with open arms. The company’s values resonated deeply with me, and I knew I had made the right choice.

I saw Hilti’s values come to life immediately. My onboarding experience was warm and thorough, and my team genuinely cared about helping me succeed. I remember a moment when a colleague went out of their way to help me navigate a new system not because they had to, but because that’s how people operate here. Respect and teamwork aren’t only talked about, they’re lived.

Aligning Values and Creating Balance

Leaving my previous company after 15 years to join Hilti wasn’t easy. That company had been a big part of my life, but I came to realize that I was no longer growing and developing there. I wanted more than stability; I wanted purpose and alignment.

I knew Hilti was the right place for me when I saw how much they invest in their people. From leadership development to wellness programs, it was clear this organization and the people leading it cared about the whole person.

One of my proudest moments was going back to college after deciding it wasn’t for me many years ago. I earned my degree while working here. Hilti and my team supported me every step of the way, and that growth has empowered me to take on new challenges with confidence. It turns out college was for me after all, I only had to get the timing right.

Winding Roads Lead to Fulfilling Destinations

Not all paths are straight, and that’s okay. Sometimes the winding road leads to the most fulfilling destinations. Whether it’s the military, a new career, going back to school or a leap of faith, every step has shaped who I am today. And for that, I am grateful. If you’re standing at a crossroads, unsure of which way to go remember, it’s not about finding the perfect path. It’s about forging your own.
