Beyond Borders: Zoe’s Global Journey of Leadership, Representation, and Growth at Hilti

Written by the Hilti GB / Northern Europe employer brand team – sharing real stories and insights into life, culture and careers at Hilti.
Some careers are defined by titles. Others are defined by transformation.
For Zoe Yu, her Hilti story is one of constant evolution – of stretching beyond comfort zones, crossing cultural borders, and discovering what it truly means to work in a place that balances high expectations with high care.
That balance, Zoe says, is what makes Hilti a great place to work. From day one, she felt something unique: a culture where people are encouraged to speak up, where leaders are expected to make the right decisions, and where performance is matched with humanity. A culture that doesn’t just expect excellence – it invests in the people who deliver it.
This is where her global leadership journey began.
From China: building strong foundations
Zoe’s journey started in China as a Senior Sales Manager, leading a team of 18 across regional and technical functions. It was a role that sharpened her ability to:
- engage deeply with customers
- lead diverse, high‑performing teams
- coach leaders and build talent pipelines
- manage both people and performance with clarity
Later, she stepped into the Trade Manager role for China’s largest segment – the transport industry – expanding her strategic exposure and shaping market direction.
But even then, she knew growth does not happen in comfort.
A bigger challenge was calling.
A leap of courage: relocating to Manchester
Moving from China to Manchester was not a small step. It was a deliberate stretch.
I wanted to push myself beyond my comfort zone and prove that leadership translates across cultures.
Manchester welcomed her with its authentic, resilient, diverse personality – a city whose industrial heritage mirrors the construction industry itself.
The relocation wasn’t easy. New leadership rhythms, communication styles, and cultural expectations challenged her in ways no training could ever prepare her for. It also expanded her empathy:
“I understand now what it truly feels like to be the new person. That shaped how I lead inclusively today.”
And with that came the realisation that Hilti’s culture – open, supportive, deeply people‑centric – was the anchor that made the transition possible. A culture that makes space for growth, vulnerability, and ambition.
Internal mobility: a transformational accelerator
For Zoe, internal mobility has been one of the most powerful accelerators of her career.
“Moving roles and countries forced me to learn, relearn, unlearn, and adapt.”
She believes Hilti’s commitment to mobility sends a strong message: potential matters more than background.
Her journey across borders proved that when organisations invest in people they unlock leaders who are agile, resilient, and globally-minded.
Leading with empathy, clarity, and courage
Today, Zoe’s leadership style is grounded in three pillars:
- Empathy
She leads by putting herself in her team’s shoes – understanding, supporting, and encouraging them to step into their own potential.
- Empowerment
She fosters entrepreneurship by allowing her people to make decisions, take ownership, and grow through experience.
- Leading from the front
If she asks her team to stretch, she stretches first.
If she asks them to take initiative, she’s already in the driver’s seat.

Creating a safe, high‑performing environment
Zoe believes that psychological safety and high standards are not opposites – they are partners.
She creates this environment by focusing on:
- Psychological safety
She models vulnerability and openly shares her own mistakes and learning moments.
- Clarity
Safety is not about lowering expectations. It’s about setting clear ones and evaluating them fairly.
- Visible support
She separates performance conversations from development conversations, so her team feels safe to take intelligent risks.
“In my team, we celebrate effort – not just outcome.”
Representation matters – strategically, not symbolically
As an Asian woman in construction, Zoe knows representation isn’t a “nice to have” – it’s critical.
Construction shapes the world we live in. If the people building it don’t reflect society, we risk designing environments that exclude.
Seeing diversity on site influences:
- decision‑making
- innovation
- customer connection
- what younger generations believe is possible
For Zoe, representation is about expanding the table – not just sitting at it.

Moments of impact on the job site
One moment stands out deeply for her:
Standing on a job site as a customer turned to her and said:
“We rely on Hilti.”
In high‑pressure environments – where safety, deadlines, and financial risk intersect – those words hit differently. They carry weight, responsibility and pride.
They reminded her that Hilti’s work is not theoretical – it impacts real people, real buildings, and real communities.
Driving customer success through innovation and partnership
Working with public sector customers, Zoe sees the difference Hilti brings:
- safer, more productive tool solutions
- service excellence through Fleet Management
- software that reduces operational costs
- partnerships built on trust, not transactions
It’s not just about tools – it’s about enabling customers to do their jobs better, safer, and faster.

Overcoming barriers, internal and external
Early in her career, Zoe sometimes felt underestimated as a woman on construction sites. She faced scepticism and moments where she had to prove credibility more than others.
Her response?
- preparation
- deep technical expertise
- consistent performance
- resilience
But her greatest barrier came from within: imposter syndrome, especially after relocating internationally.
She reframed discomfort as growth. And today?
I don’t just want a seat at the table – I want to expand the table.
She’s determined that the next generation of women in construction face fewer barriers than she did.
Hilti culture in three words
People. Performance. Diversity.
And those three words are exactly what her story represents.
