Code & Standards Manager

What's the role?

The Codes & Standards Sr. Manager, Direct Fastening (DF) is responsible crafting and driving the Direct Fastening HNA code and approval strategy to achieve Hilti corporate goals. It identifies opportunities and threats related to existing or new Code & Approval requirements. It will supervise the activities of the DF Approvals Engineers ensuring technical data is accurate and approvals and evaluation reports are correct and obtained on time. The long-term goal of this role is to influence the code and approval landscape, reflect state of the art application for direct fastening applications, and enable product differentiation for Hilti while supporting customers and Marketing Organizations by providing accurate and competitive technical data.

What does the role involve?

Approvals

  • Responsible for coaching and developing team members – Approvals Engineers and Test Engineer
  • Lead approval tasks for new and existing DF BU products, either Time to Money (TTM) projects or standalone projects based on business needs.
  • Manage approval/ evaluation report/ listing portfolio and recommend additions and improvements aligned with Hub marketing (product management.)
  • Support MO’s and customers related to product and application questions; serve as level 2 resource.
  • Provide training and updates to TSE team to support level 1 customer questions.
  • Evaluate proposals from the marketing organizations in conjunction with the business unit for potential return on investment from approval and research projects.
  • Assist in the negotiation of contracts with external testing agencies and approval bodies.
Codes and Regulations:
  • Maintain an overview of relevant North American Codes and Regulations related to DF and SFS products and translate status and anticipated changes into business opportunities.
  • Understand and translate formal/ technical requirements to stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain network of relevant code officials / authorities (eg American Iron and Steel Institute) and key influencers (university researchers, test agencies, competitors, opinion leaders, trade associations eg Steel Deck Institute).
  • Initiate/ participate/ manage relevant research projects to further develop the state of the art as a basis for future code changes.
  • Participate in relevant code committees to anticipate, monitor, initiate and execute relevant code changes (eg AISI COS, AISI COFS, ASTM E06, NHERP Building Seismic Safety Committee.).
  • Support creation of technical literature and software, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with codes and standards.
  • Ensure quality of all activities in line with Hilti GPMS.
  • Support implementation of global Code and Approval Strategy and Roadmap for BU DF.
General
  • Stakeholder Management: efficient and transparent communication with all internal and external stakeholders. This includes the global DF and SFS business units, other BUs, global codes and standards community of Hilti, local HUB marketing, and HNA marketing organizations.
  • Beyond external key contacts in the code and approval arena maintain close cooperation with other functional teams in the HNA and BU DF and SFS organizations, i.e. Marketing, Quality, and Supply.
  • Follow the rules for efficient collaboration and knowledge management, including proper documentation and maintenance of data bases, etc.
  • Additional duties, as assigned.

What you need is:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering, required
  • Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in building construction or related engineering industry, required
  • Building construction code/ standard/ guideline development and superior technical writing skills.
  • Experience in research, preferred
  • Experience in working/ relationship building/ networking with key influencing bodies in construction industry
  • Proficiency in English; bi-lingual preferred
  • Proficient PC knowledge in all standard Microsoft Windows applications, required
  • Analytical skills, strategic thinking and organizational awareness/ resourceful use of influence
  • Ability to work with time lines and deliver superior results under pressure
  • Ability to work with large amounts of data, while reducing complexity
  • Ability to maintain strong technical position, while being flexible to accept different viewpoints to develop own viewpoint
  • Motivational, convincing and proactive
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal, written, presentation) skills
