Intern - Robotics (m/f/x)

What's the role?

Hilti has recently launched a semi-autonomous mobile drilling robot, the Jaibot. But many challenges remain. During this internship, you will investigate, test and develop on state-of-the-art algorithms functional to mobile manipulator autonomy. It is a challenging opportunity to get both theoretical insights into the algorithmic aspects as well as to do hands on implementation, practical work on physical robot prototypes.

Start date is flexible to the student's availability, duration of at least 6 months

Who is Hilti?

For the sixth time in the past 11 years, Hilti has been named one of the best employers by Great Place to Work.
What began as a family business in 1941, founded by brothers Eugene and Martin Hilti, has become a leading industry player with over 120 locations worldwide and a workforce of more than 33,000 colleagues. Our incredible journey, from humble beginnings to a global powerhouse, is a shining example of the rewards of a hard-working and dedicated team.
At Hilti, we provide leading-edge tools, technologies, software, and services for the global construction industry and beyond. Our purpose is making construction better based on a passionate and inclusive global team and a caring and performance-oriented culture.
We invest a substantial amount of our annual profit to the Hilti Foundation, which focuses on initiatives that empower people to live independently and autonomously, contribute to building stronger societies, and create networks of competent partners to achieve sustainable and scalable impact.

What does the role involve?

As an intern in our Robotics & Visual Computing group, you will be part of our research and technology development team on construction robot autonomy topics. You will work closely with leading experts in the field to explore and dive into cutting edge robot autonomy algorithms.

Mobile manipulator autonomy revolves around three main topics of manipulator motion planning w/o obstacle avoidance, robot localization and mapping with focus on sensor fusion and mobile base path planning w/o obstacle avoidance. Depending on your interest, motivation and prior experiences, you will be tasked to work on either one or two of the three autonomy topics. Irrespective of the autonomy topic, the key assignment is to understand and document the algorithmic details behind the state-of-the-art methods and simulate, test and develop on them for construction application use cases on physical robot prototypes. Additionally, you will test the robustness and limitations of these algorithms and explore practical challenges and solutions especially considering real world deployment scenarios.

INNOVATION - We have 400 of the world’s best engineers developing and testing tomorrow’s technical solutions in our innovation center in Liechtenstein.

What do we offer?

Show us what you’re made of and we’ll offer you opportunities to move around the business – to work abroad, experience different job functions and tackle different markets. It’s a great way to find the right match for your ambitions and achieve the exciting career you’re after.

We have a very thorough people review process, unlike any we know of in any other business. We screen everyone in the company in a yearly career performance matching process. It means we can pair talent with opportunities - developing our people in their current roles or challenging them to work in new ways or in new places. It’s how we find the right fit and further our teams personally and professionally.

Additionally, we offer you a competitive salary and a wide range of benefits, these may include day care for your kids or a free in-house gym.

What you need is:

  • Enrollment for the whole internship period in a Master’s program in computer science, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering
  • Good knowledge and prior experience in programming (C++, ROS, Gazebo)
  • Hardware debugging and code deployment experience on physical robot prototypes
  • Experience with either motion planning or sensor fusion algorithms for manipulator and mobile robots
  • Patience, drive and persistence for working on challenging problems
  • Why should you apply?

Joining more than 2100 colleagues from over 70 nationalities at one of our headquarters locations in Schaan, Nendeln, or Buchs is more than a career move. It’s your opportunity to enjoy the energizing, alpine lifestyle - where Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland seamlessly meet.
Share your interests and become a part of one of our employee groups leading change locally, for example, supporting female empowerment or the LGBTQIA+ community or joining a leisure group for a Wednesday mountain bike ride or tennis match. If you are passionate about giving back to the community, we have various opportunities to volunteer through our engaged beyond business program locally and internationally.
Additional benefits of our headquarters location include shared e-bikes for your commute, an on-site gym, three restaurants, language courses, learning and development training opportunities and spousal support, and more.
