Data Engineer

What's the role?

In the role of Data Engineer, you will be developing, deploying, and maintaining data pipelines to support analytics and data science on a Hilti group level as well as custom reporting solutions in Hilti sales regions. Embedded in the global enterprise data lake team you will work closely with leading experts in the field of data engineering and data science. You will interact with key stakeholders from business and across IT teams to integrate and transform required data into the Enterprise Data Platform. You translate business requirements of internal customers into technically viable solutions by owning, implementing, and maintaining data provisioning.

Global IT within Hilti is a truly global team with main hubs in Buchs (Switzerland), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Plano/Tulsa (USA). What does the role involve?

The integrated global information management (IM) department serves as the global center of excellence in the realm of business intelligence and analytics. We are currently embarking on an exciting journey to transform the reporting landscape of the organization, moving from hindsight reporting to analytics, insights and foresight. This organizational transformation requires the technical ideation and implementation for well managed data governance, your future domain of responsibility. The department hosts top experts in the fields of business intelligence, data science as well as data engineering and pioneers Hilti’s journey to a data driven company. We are at the forefront of technology innovation, working with the latest technology and striving to enable employees at all levels to make the best decision to drive business outcome.

  • In the role of a data engineer, you retrieve, process and store large sets of data. The target is to utilize the data for analysis work as well as data driven applications (e.g. marketing, reporting, automation or IoT software).
  • You determine the optimal solution design for these processes while maintaining, implementing, and monitoring them.
  • Integrate data from multiple sources and work closely with other data engineers and data scientists to derive data requirements.
  • Deal with high level of technical complexity and offer integration across various technical platforms. The role will require you to fully understand dataflows on organizational as well as technical level.
  • Working closely together with team members of the global enterprise data lake, you will establish and execute data provisioning, ranging from initial requests to the technical realization of accessing the data.
  • Guaranteeing the seamless, timely and well managed provisioning of data from all data domains to all data domains in the company.
  • Maintain high technical skills, share your knowledge across teams and actively enable other data engineers.
  • Maintain strong connections with people throughout all Hilti organizations and with suppliers - functional and cross-functional.
  • Monitor technical trends and drive innovative IT solutions at Hilti

What you need is:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering (Computer/Telecommunication) or any related quantitative field; a Master’s Degree is an advantage for this position.
  • High understanding of distributed computing framework and big data systems, experience with object-oriented coding, proficiency with Hadoop, MapReduce, HDFS, etc.
  • Experience with data integration designs within at least one cloud based hyper scaler (AWS, Azure) is preferred for this position.
  • High-level analytical skills to understand statistical models when collaborating with Data Scientists
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Spark) & experience in maintaining cloud applications.
  • Excellent communication ability to share and explain insights and results in simple and powerful terms to non-experts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and can engage with stakeholders from different disciplines in all levels of the organization.
